This Weekend's Indies: "The Bling Ring," "20 Feet From Stardom" and More
Opening this week in limited release: Sofia Coppola is back, Italian horror goes meta, and a pair of great-looking docs.
The Bling Ring
The anticipation for Sofia Coppola's fifth feature film has been deafening ... at least around these parts. But between gushing over its trailer and digging into the musical history of Coppola's films, we've got ourselves all sorts of primed to see this. It's one of two Emma Watson movies coming out this weekend, along with the wide-released This Is The End, and it looks like she's good to snatch the Queen of the Weekend crowd away from Amy "Lois Lane" Adams.
Call Me Kuchu
The legal and political strife in Uganda over a bill that calls for all gays and lesbians to be executed has been in the news, off and on, for a while, but in Kuchu, the issue is brought front and center and with gripping humanity. This promises to be the weekend's most powerful experience.
20 Feet From Stardom
This documentary about career backup singers boasts appearances from the likes of Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen, but for a certain type of fan, it's the fact that the film centers on -- among others -- Darlene Love that will seal the deal on a ticket purchase.
Berberian Sound Studio
This one feels like a gift to horror fans -- to movie geeks in general, really. An Italian-style horror film set in the world of post-production for an Italian horror movie. Toby Jones is a quirky choice for a protagonist, but he can really get the job done, and it's the concept here that's really the main attraction.
