This Weekend's Indies: 'Before Midnight,' WikiLeaks, and More

Before Midnight
Buckets and buckets of words have been written about the three-film series shepherded throughout the years by Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy. To say it's struck a chord with moviegoers would be a vast understatement. When it played at the Tribeca Film Festival, I got to see it for myself, and it's a lovely, wise, and cutting work. Now is the part where audiences start getting to see it. It's starting off small, of course, but I would be very surprised if it took very long to open wide.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks
Director Alex Gibney has a stellar track-record with current-events documentaries, from Taxi to the Dark Side to Client 9 to last year's searing Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God. Now, he's back with We Steal Secrets, a look at Julian Assange and WikiLeaks at a time when the subject is primed to be in the headlines yet again. Bill Condon is making a narrative feature to be released later this year, so you can ultimately see both and have a dramatized/undramatized spectrum of events.

Fill the Void
This Israeli film from director Rama Burshtein has already been celebrated on the festival circuit and with an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Dealing with issues of orthodoxy, culture, modernization and the bonds (chains?) of family and community, it's probably going to be a great programming option if you're all burned out from high-octane Fast/Furious and Hangover options.
