This Weekend's Indies: 'Short Term 12,' 'Drinking Buddies,' and More

Short Term 12: If it seems like I've been banging thr drum about this one incessantly ... well, I have. But only because it's one of the best movies you will see all year. That's all. Brie Larson's lead perormance has gotten much deserved attention (she's been ready to break through like this for a few years now), but there's a whole movie full of actors giving remarkably true and sensitive perormances. If all you've seen of John Gallagher Jr. is The Newsroom, please check him out here.

Drinking Buddies: Mumblecore darling Joe Swanberg is back with this polyonic romantic comedy. From the looks of it, it's one of those movies where best friends (Jake Johnson and Olivia Wilde) get caught up with significant others (Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston) when they're really super meant for each other. All set up in the millieu of a craft brewery. The reviews for this one have been quite strong as well, and it's theatrical/VOD release strategy has gotten it some solid attention.

The Grandmaster: Acclaimed director Wong Kar-Wai's long-gestating kung-fu epic finally makes it to American movie screens. With a historical story about the man who trained Bruce Lee, there are certainly inroads towards pushing this for an American audience. Certainly, those who remember Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Zhang Ziyi in Hero (and Ziyi again in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will find a draw. And if nothing else, they're selling it as "from the fight coordinator of The Matrix and Kill Bill," which as creative a marketing strategy as I've heard of lately.

The Frozen Ground: Nicolas Cage. Vanessa Hudgens. John Cusack. Dean Norris, a.k.a. Hank from Breaking Bad. 50 Cent. An Alaskan crime thriller. Are you not even a little curious as to how this all comes together?
