7 TFF 2014 Titles To Watch On Netflix Over The Holidays

If you and/or your family are anything like ours, you spend the majority of the holiday season indulging in rich food and movie marathons. Frankly,  outdoor activities are overrated. Your movie marathon should definitely include some exceptional TFF titles from this past year currently available to stream on Netflix Instant. Whether you caught them in April or are discovering these films for the first time, we guarantee they are more interesting than anything you’ll find at the local megaplex.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball
Dirs. Chapman Way & Maclain Way

Play ball! Those of you at a certain age may know Bing Russell (yes, Kurt Russell’s father) best from his role on Bonanza, but did you know that, after his acting career was over, he became the owner of the Portland Mavericks, a groundbreaking independent baseball club? This fascinating doc explores Russell’s many innovative moves, like hiring professional baseball's first female general manager and keeping commercial sponsorship out of the ballpark.

A Brony Tale
Dir. Brent Hodge

Initially, you may be hesitant to watch a documentary about a bunch of guys who love My Little Pony. Who could blame you? However, we beg you to look past the weirdness. The film explores the Brony phenomenon through the perspective ofvoice actress Ashleigh Ball who embarks on a journey to New York's My Little Pony convention to scout out the scene. Audiences also get a firsthand look at the Brony community as they organize and attend meetups, shows, and conferences to celebrate a show about friendship and magic.

In Your Eyes
Dir. Brin Hill

Penned by Joss Whedon, this fantastical sci-fi love story features Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David as two strangers who share an inexplicable connection with each other. As they begin to embrace their mutual gift, they form a strong friendship that leads to romance (and other complications in their lives, ‘natch).

The One I Love
Dir. Charlie McDowell

Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss star in this utterly original romantic drama that captivated audiences at this year’s Festival. Duplass and Moss play Ethan and Sophie, a couple, who on the advice of their  therapist, take a weekend long excursion to a remote cabin  to try to save their marriage. Once they arrive, they start to experience  unexplainable phenomena and things get very strange.

Slaying the Badger
Dir. John Dower

Before Lance Armstrong, there was Greg LeMond, the first and only American to officially win the Tour de France. In addition to providing an in-depth look at the 1986 Tour, this captivating film also explores LeMond’s intense rivalry with friend, teammate, and mentor, Bernard Hinault. After watching this doc, you may be inspired to leave the couch, hop on your bike, and tackle the Alps.

Virunga
Dir. Orlando von Einsiedel

This gripping documentary from last year’s Festival explores the current political and ecological crisis in the Congo through events at the Virunga National Park. In addition to being the last natural habitat for the endangered mountain gorilla, the park serves as a  battleground for competing interests— poachers, preservationists, and multi-national corporations. The film focuses on a group of activists, park rangers, and journalists as they team up to protect Virunga and its surrounding community.

When The Garden Was Eden
Dir. Michael Rapaport

Feel like playing a game of pick up? New York’s own Michael Rapaport delivers a moving tribute to the glory days of the 70s New York Knicks based on Harvey Araton’s best-selling book from 2012. This vibrant documentary features interviews with Knick icons like Walt “Clyde” Frazier, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Phil Jackson, among others.
