This Weekend's Indies: 'Cheap Thrills,' 'Blood Ties,' 'Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1' & More

Cheap Thrills: After getting an eviction notice and losing his job, a family man Craig and his best friend head out to drown their sorrows at the bar. There, they meet a sadistic, bored couple who challenge them to increasingly dangerous tasks for increasingly large sums of money. As the night rages on, and the tasks get bigger, Craig finds himself more and more willing to do anything for the promised cash.

Blood Ties:

In Guillaume Canet's English-language directorial debut, two brothers stand on opposing sides of the law as the fight against organized crime takes over 1970s Brooklyn. This remake of Canet's Les liens du sang is riddled with betrayal, jealousy, and questions about the ties that bind.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I: The first part Lars von Trier's controversial film has finally landed in the US. Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) recounts her life through the sexual encounters she's experienced as a nymphomaniac, after a stranger takes her in. Where did it all start, and will it ever end? The impressive ensemble cast also includes Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård, Uma Thurman, and Sophie Kennedy Clark.

McCanick: Someone knows too much about the past of Mack, an otherwise respected cop. Unfortunately, that someone is a young criminal (Cory Monteith) who seems to have turned his life around. The chase is on as Mack tries to track down the kid who could destroy his world--but only if he doesn't destroy his first.

Rob the Mob: This film from TFF 2009 alum Raymond De Felitta tells the true story of a Queens couple who robs mob hangouts and earns the wrath  of their victims and the FBI. If they play their cards right, they'll come out on top. If not, they'll wind up dead.
