This Weekend's Indies: 'The Sleepwalker,' 'Bad Hair' 'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night' and More

The Sleepwalker: From first-time filmmaker Mona Fastvold and seasoned writer Brady Corbet (Simon Killer, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Melancholia) comes this backwoods thriller that takes place in rural Massachussets. A new couple spending time at an old family home finds their vacation interrupted by a sudden visit from an unstable sister who is the titular sleepwalker. Old family histories get trudged up and new relationships are tested as the weekend progresses.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night:  Ana Lily Amirpour's debut film premiered at the New Directors/New Films series presented by MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center earlier this year, telling the story of a young vampire who patrols the streets of the fictional Bad City at night to find her victims. A generic blend of Western, noir, Iranian New Wave, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a promising new feature from this first time filmmaker.

Bad Hair: A Spanish-language Venezuelan film that played at TFF 2014 earlier this year, Bad Hair follows Junior, a 9-year-old obsessed with straightening his hair. This worries Junior's domineering and mildly homophobic mother, who reacts harshly and leads Junior to find refuge with his much more accepting grandmother. The film goes beyond the quiet story of a child and his struggle with self-expression to articulate the social condition of a small family.

Extraterrestrial: A group camping trip ends with an alien invasion in Extraterrestrial, a horror sci-fi movie  with the cringe-inducing tagline urging viewers to #getprobed. The latest from the Vicious Brothers is likely to be as much of an intense ride as their debut, Grave Encounters.
