10 Great Movie Soundtracks Performed by Actors

Inspired by The Broken Circle Bluegrass Band of The Broken Circle Breakdown, we take a look at ten fantastic movie soundtracks that feature the singing talents of some exceptional actors.

1.Crazy Heart (2009)

Another award-winning soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett. The Crazy Heart theme, "The Weary Kind" is enough to send chills down your spine.

2. The Blues Brothers (1980)

Sure, Elwood and Jake had help from the likes of Cab Calloway and Aretha Franklin, but they helped us remember that "Everybody needs somebody (to love)".

3. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Seu Jorge's Portugese renditions of David Bowie's most popular songs are at once different and familiar. Just listen to his version of "Lady Stardust".

4. The Commitments (1991)

Soul music. Dublin. Need I say more?

5. School of Rock (2003)

You're not hardcore, unless you live hardcore. These kids, headed by Jack Black, are mini Rock geniuses.

6. Walk the Line (2005)

Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash is second only to Cash himself. A thousand hearts broke as he sang "It Ain't Me, Babe".

7. The Sapphires (2012)

Australia's very own soul singers. In the film, the group is led by Jessica Mauboy, Australian pop star.  8. Once (2006)

Love. Music. Dublin. And the songs you heard everywhere.   9. The Muppets (2011)

The Muppets are known for their original songs, and the decision to get Bret MacKenzie (1/2 of Flight of the Conchords) to write several songs for them was clearly the right choice. Peter Linz and Jason Segel sing this charming Oscar-winner.

10. Some Like It Hot (1959)

Marilyn Monroe's classic "I Wanna Be Loved By You" may be the most famous, but it's not the only song she and the film's "Society Sycopators" perform.
