War Witch Wins Big At The Canadian Screen Awards
“War Witch,” director Kim Nguyen, and actors Rachel Mwanza and Serge Kanyinda were recognized at last’s night Canadian Screen Awards.
Fresh from last week's Oscar ceremony, War Witch, the harrowing film about the struggles of a girl forced to become a child soldier, received multiple honors at the first annual Canadian Screen Awards, hosted by Martin Short.
Shot on location in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, War Witch, is a remarkable film that has been well respected on the awards circuit, both domestically and internationally. Playing at such renowned festivals as the Toronto International Film Festival, The AFI Festival, and our own Tribeca Film Festival, War Witch garnered its first important prize at the Berlin International Film Festival where Rachel Mwanza received the coveted Silver Bear for Best Actress.
Given that War Witch was nominated both for Best International Film at the Independent Spirit Awards and Best Foreign Language Feature at the Academy Awards, its cast and crew (including Mwanza, who secured a travel visa at the last minute) were able to take part in the all the glitz and glamour of award season. Following those ceremonies, the group returned to Canada for the coveted Canadian Screen Awards as chosen by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
War Witch received 10 prizes (out of 12 nominations) at the Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Design/Production Design, Best Editing, Best Overall Sound, and Best Sound Design. We wish to congratulate the entire cast and crew of War Witch for the recognition that they so richly deserve.
War Witch is currently available on VOD and digital platforms and is currently playing at selected theaters in New York with an expanded theatrical rollout to follow.
