With less than a week to go until the Oscars broadcast, we understand that you may not have watched all of the nominated films, so we have a few tips to help you predict who will be a winner on the big night. 

We are also thrilled to see a few TFF alums in the mix. Keep your fingers crossed for Virunga, Imitation Game, Whiplash, and The Phone Call. 

Look for Repeat Offenders

It stands to reason that past winners or nominees are talented and well-liked enough to win again. The third time might be the charm for Bradley Cooper (American Sniper,) who was nominated for Best Actor for the past two years in a row. Reese Witherspoon is nominated for Best Actress again after taking it home in 2006 for her role as June Cash in Walk the Line, just like Marion Cotillard, who won it in 2008 for La Vie En Rose. Julianne Moore’s performance as Alice in Still Alice is her fourth nomination, her first was in 1998 for her unforgettable Maggie in Boogie Nights.

Meryl Streep secured her yearly nomination for Into the Woods, joining fellow awards-season regulars Keira Knightley and Laura Dern in the Best Supporting Actress category. Nominated almost as often as Meryl is Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who only won the award last year for his work on Gravity despite his frequent nominations for his collaborations with Terrence Malick.

They are Already a Winner in 2015

A good Oscar prediction always considers the winners from the Critics’ Choice, SAG, and Golden Globe awards, though this only really works when there’s some sort of consistency. This year’s SAG Award winners included Eddie Redmayne’s Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything for Best Actor and the cast of Birdman for Best Ensemble, surprising those who were betting on Boyhood for one of both of those categories. But with Golden Globes for Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, Boyhood still stands a chance at the upcoming Oscars. Unsurprising results from the SAG Awards were Julianne Moore’s win and J.K. Simmons’s Best Supporting Actor for Whiplash, which look to be solid choices for the Oscars as well.
