This Weekend's Indies: 'Jimi: All Is By My Side,' 'Advanced Style,' 'Pride'

Jimi: All Is By My Side: Outkast's Andre Benjamin (you'll remember him as Andre 3000) stars as Jimi Hendrix in this biopic from John Ridley about the guitarist's ascent to stardom upon his move to London in the late '60s. With kaleidoscopic visuals and Hendrix's trademark philosophical one-liners, this is the psychedelic throwback movie to see.

Advanced Style: Advanced Style started as a blog, became a book, then a Kickstarter-funded documetnary project. The Advanced Style ladies, 62 at the youngest, keep their wardrobes and lifestyles fresh with bold, unique fashion choices. You can read our interview with director Lina Plioplyte about the film here.

Pride: A Welsh mining village struggling under the Margaret Thatcher's aggressive campaign against unions finds unlikely support from a neighboring LGBT activist group. It's the comic dynamic between these two groups that really charms about this film, as the brusque working class village addresses their own issues with homophobia while striking for their rights as laborers.
