Looking For Something Dark & Twisted? Don't Miss These Tribeca 2016 Genre Films

Here's everything you need to know to satisfy those horror, thriller, and late-night film urges during this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Looking For Something Dark & Twisted? Don't Miss These Tribeca 2016 Genre Films
Clockwise from top left: A KIND OF MURDER, HOLIDAYS, FEAR, INC., and HERE ALONE

It takes a special kind of cinephile to binge-watch three to four movies per day, on top of attending multiple live talks and panels, for nearly two weeks without tapping out and finding the nearest bed. Taking full of advantage of the Tribeca Film Festival's 12-day timeframe will be highly recommended, considering the 2016 edition's ginormous lineup of programming, but it'll also be an endurance test. But there's a foolproof way to keep one's resolve steady and excitement piqued: embracing the adrenaline rushes that come from the best hard-edged genre cinema. Fortunately, Tribeca 2016 is packed with that.

The main source for such cinematic jolts is the Festival's late-night-ready Midnight section, dedicated to no-holds-barred horror, action, and thrillers. The Midnight program opens with the horror anthology film Holidays, co-directed by some of the indie scene’s most promising new scare creators, as well as the ever-ubiquitous Kevin Smith, and offering tales about serial killers, voices from beyond the grave, homicidal Easter bunnies, and plenty more perverse oddities. The rest of Midnight is equally varied—there are zombies (Here Alone), human trafficking (Tiger Raid), cults (Rebirth), a gay porn industry pulse-pounder starring James Franco (King Cobra).

Outside of the Midnight lineup, meanwhile, other programs will also cater to those who appreciate cinema's darker sides, with everything from a modern riff on Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (Detour), a feminist character study inspired by Ingmar Bergman's Persona (Always Shine), and an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Blunderer (A Kind of Murder).

Here's a complete breakdown of what genre enthusiasts shouldn’t miss at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. For screening dates, visit the Film Guide. Tickets go on sale March 29.
