Throughout all of the recent talk about #OscarsSoWhite and the film industry's lack of diversity, there's been one major talking point that’s gone strangely under-discussed: Mexican cinema is seriously killing it right now. Just look at Alejandro González Iñárritu's track record over the last two years—he's won the Academy Award for Best Director twice in a row, for 2014's Birdman and 2015’s The Revenant. The year before Inarritu’s Birdman victory, though, his fellow Mexican auteur—and longtime friendAlfonso Cuarón broke down Oscar's barriers by becoming the first-ever Latin director to win that award, for the audacious sci-fi hit Gravity.

And what do Iñárritu and Cuarón have in common, besides their Mexican heritage? They've both worked with legendary Mexico City-born cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, one of the greatest visual minds in all of cinema. While his directorial collaborators have dominated the last three Academy Awards seasons, Lubezki has singlehandedly owned his respective category, winning Best Cinematography three years in a row for Gravity, Birdman, and The Revenant.

So it's only right that Lubezki joins his Gravity colleague at Tribeca 2016. The Tribeca Film Festival has announced that Emmanuel Lubezki will join Alfonso Cuarón for the latter's previously announced Tribeca Talks: Directors Series event on April 20th. What better way to celebrate Mexican cinema's current renaissance than through a conversation between two of its most prestigious leaders?
