Streaming Your Lonely Hearts Valentine

If you're spending Valentine's Day with your favorite person - yourself - let us plan your night. Each movie on this week's list is paired with a suggested meal, drink, or song for a fully curated experience.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
Watch on Netflix
Part of the charm of the Bridget Jones series is realizing that your life is never as bad as hers. In this sequel to Bridget Jones Diary, our heroine breaks up with her boyfriend, gets indicted for being an unwitting drug mule in Thailand, and continually humiliates herself on national television.

Pair with: Madonna's Like a Virgin, sing along with Bridget and her Thai inmates.

Bernie
Watch on Netflix
It's hard to tell whether Bernie and 81-year-old Marjorie Nugent necessarily had a romantic relationship, but Nugent's consistent nagging reminds us of how we could just kill our partner sometimes. Bernie, however, acts on that impulse and actually kills Marjorie and stuffs her in his meat freezer. This movie tells the story of how he kept that secret from the small-town in which he is, of course, the mortician.

Pair with: anything from your meat freezer. Anything. You should probably clean out your meat freezer.

Carrie
Watch on Netflix
Unfortunately, only the 2013 remake of Carrie is available to stream, but the fact that this teenage girl's venture at a real relationship fails in the most spectacularly paranormal fashion is exactly in the spirit of this great holiday. Hell hath no fury and all that.

Pair with: a bucket of pigs blood. If you can't find any, substitute with a bucket of red wine.

Frances Ha
Watch on Netflix
It speaks to the excellence of the screenwriting that you never really understand Frances as a lonely heart, despite bceoming isolated after her roommate gets engaged. A lesson in independence and self-sufficiency can be learned from her story, which is marked equally with moments of weakness and strength.

Pair with: a large pizza, your best friend, and self-love.

Salinger
Watch on Netflix
Very many people have tried to reach noted literary loner J.D. Salinger over the years with limited success - reports describe Salinger confronting fans who would wait outside his residence. This documentary touches on some of the hot-button issues surrounding the author - his reculsion, the number of murderers who loved his work, his brief affair with an 18-year-old college student.

Pair with: a stiff drink and no human interaction for the weekend.
