5 Films About Artists in Love

Summer in February, starring Dominic Cooper and Dan Stevens, tells the story of artist Alfred Munnings and his blue blood friend Gilbert as they compete for the attention of Florence (Emily Browning). Based on a true story, the film depicts how love and struggle can go hand-in-hand.

The lives of artists and writers are often seen as dark, volatile love stories and chance meetings. As we celebrate the cinematic and VOD release of Summer in February, join us on a walk through the true love stories of some of the most celebrated artists and writers.

Modigliani (2004)
Dir. Mick Davis

Andy Garcia stars as the Italian artist living in Paris during Picasso's most celebrated years. Love is not enough for Modigliani, who paints to prove he is truly a genius of form and style. His affair with Jeanne Hébuterne suffers as Picasso becomes his greater obsession.

Camille Claudel (1988)
Dir. Bruno Nuytten

Isabelle Adjani and Gérard Depardieu star as Camille Claudel and her lover Auguste Rodin. Both sculptors in their own right, they dedicated their lives to their art and to each other. Their infamously passionate love story could only end in heartbreak.

Nora (2004)
Dir. Pat Murphy

Playing James Joyce, Ewan McGregor is a portrait of the artist as a young man. Soon enough, he meets Nora, the woman who inspired so many of his greatest works. Joyce battles his darkest demons, paranoia, and jealousy as Nora struggles to retain part of herself while shaping him into the writer he would become.

Frida (2002)
Dir. Julie Taymor

Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina, and Antonio Banderas all star in this film about the revolutionary artist. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's marriage, affairs, and careers show the complicated intersection of art and love.

Molière (2007)
Dir. Laurent Tiraud

Romain Duris stars as of the the world's most prolific playwrights. After his enormous debt lands him in jail, Molière takes a job working for an lovestruck aristocrat. Armed with only his words and a secret identity, he soon finds out why one should never mix business and pleasure. He also finds the fodder he needs to become the Comédie-Française's resident playwright.
