Deadfall
Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky

In this riveting TFF 2012 thriller, Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde star as a pair of siblings on the run from local authorities during a blizzard after a Casino heist goes bad. Set in the frozen Upper Peninsula wilderness in Michigan, the film combines elements of the Western, Drama, Crime and Romance genres to form one intriguing cinematic hybrid.

Fargo
Directed by The Coen Brothers

Frances McDormand won an Oscar for her performance as Marge Gunderson, the pluckiest pregnant police chief in the history of fictional Minnesota law enforcement. As she deftly investigates “some malfeasance” in arctic conditions, Marge remains in total control, rising above the ineptitude of her fellow officers.

For Ellen
Directed by So Yong Kim

Set against the lonely frosty background of upstate New York, this art house drama stars Paul Dano as Joby Taylor, a washed up rocker who returns home to finalize his divorce and determine custody of his young daughter. One stand-out scene features Dano’s Joby singing along with Whitesnake’s “Still of the Night” after one too many drinks at a bar.

The Grey
Directed by Joe Carnahan

While The Grey is perhaps most famous (or infamous) for its  brutal climax which leaves Liam Neeson squaring off against a pack of wolves, the film is so much more. Exploring themes of masculinity, courage and sacrifice, The Grey features a group of stranded men struggling to survive in the desolate and dangerous wild of the Arctic Circle.

Sister
Directed by Ursula Meier

Starring Lea Seydoux of Blue is the Warmest Color fame, this French drama features Simon, a young boy who regularly robs the patrons of a Swiss ski resort to support himself and Louise, his troubled older sister. Minimalistic and observational in approach, the film makes Simon and Louise’s dreary and poverty-stricken lifestyle seems all the more desperate against the splendid Alps setting.
