From Fargo to The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men, the sounds of Coen brother films are exhilarating, incorporating an array of music composition and inflections of sound to add to the all-encompassing world of their movies. Panelists include Composer Carter Burwell and Academy-Award Winning Sound Mixer Skip Lievsay, who will discuss the creative process behind their films as well as the collaborative relationship with Ethan & Joel which has endured and prospered across so many films. Moderated by Director of The Dolby Institute Glenn Kiser.

Carter Burwell
Carter Burwell has composed the music for a number of feature films, including Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, Rob Roy, Fargo, The Spanish Prisoner, Gods and Monsters, Velvet Goldmine, Being John Malkovich, Before Night Falls, Adaptation, In Bruges, Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead, Burn After Reading, Twilight, The Blind Side, A Serious Man, Where The Wild Things Are, True Grit, and Mr. Holmes, as well as the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce and Olive Kitteridge.— He has taught and lectured at The Sundance Institute, New York University, Columbia University, and Harvard University.

Skip Lievsay
Skip Lievsay is one of the most accomplished sound technicians in the film industry today, having worked on more than 150 feature films, with notable directors such as Joel and Ethan Coen, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Alfonso Cuarón, John Sayles, Terrence Malick, and Jonathan Demme. In 2007, he was nominated for Sound Mixing and Sound Editing Academy Awards for No Country for Old Men, and, in 2010, in the same categories for True Grit. In 2013, he won the Academy Award for Best Sound for Gravity, being nominated in the same category for Inside Llewyn Davis.

Glenn Kiser
Glenn Kiser is the Director of the Dolby Institute, taking initiative to bring education and inspiration to filmmakers and content creators about the creative use of sound and picture in storytelling. Previously, Kiser was the VP & General Manager of Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Sound, where he oversaw sound work on a diverse range of film projects such as “Avatar”, “The Incredibles”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, and “Fahrenheit 9/11”. Before joining Skywalker, Kiser was a post-production executive at Propaganda Films, where he worked with directors including David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Jane Campion, and Neil LaBute.
