Director F. Gary Gray’s 1996 contribution to the queer canon is sacred to many 80’s babies. Resonating with Black audiences, queer viewers, and action movie enthusiasts alike, the film features iconic performances and epic set pieces. In fact, the film is so well paced Roger Ebert wrote,“this movie has the first chase scene I've seen in a long time that I've cared about.”

Through grief, loss and Black love and a series of unexpected events, we grow to love these four characters, played by Kimberly Elise, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Vivica A. Fox, who are risking it all in search of peace and freedom in an unforgiving 90’s era South Central LA.

While new audiences are discovering its classic scenes through memes and streamers, the best way to engage with Set It Off is on a big screen surrounded by your chosen community.--Shakira Refos
