When a mysterious drifter (Marc-André Grondin, C.R.A.Z.Y.) is positively identified as Nicholas Barclay, a Louisiana teenager missing for three years, his sister (Emilie de Ravin, Lost) and mother (Ellen Barkin) welcome him back into their home and begin the long road to reconciliation. But the family's joyful reunion turns bittersweet when suspicions arise about the veracity of Nicolas' claims. A skeptical FBI agent (Famke Janssen) and Barclay's deadbeat brother-in-law (Brian Geraghty) set out to prove he's an imposter, exposing an array of long-dormant family secrets in the process.
Jean-Paul Salomé's (Female Agents) English-language debut is an unsettling psychological thriller, adapted from Christoph D'Antonio's book The Chameleon and based on a bizarre true story. But it is also a riveting family drama, featuring a virtuosic performance from a nearly unrecognizable Barkin as Nicolas' tortured mother. Adeptly balancing the stories of Nicolas' mysterious disappearance and reappearance, the troubled Barclay family, and Janssen's tenacious FBI agent, The Chameleon will keep viewers guessing up to the last frame.
