Passing Strange

New York Premiere

USA | 134 MINUTES | English |

After a sold-out run at The Public Theater, a Broadway transfer, and multiple nominations and awards (including a Tony), the spectacular Passing Strange played its final super-energized performance in 2008. But before that final curtain, Spike Lee captured the show on film, amazingly retaining and transmitting the power and intensity of co-creator/star Stew and crew's performances so that nobody has to miss one of the greatest theatrical productions in recent memory.

Join Lee, Stew, and co-creator Heidi Rodewald for a conversation following the screening on May 2.

Saturday, May 2, 7:00 pm
@Directors Guild Theater

After the Movie: Join us for a conversation with director Spike Lee, creator and star Stew, and co-composer and band member Heidi Rodewald, focusing on the themes of race, culture, nationality, and adolescence raised in Stew’s semi-autobiographical show, while also exploring the difficulties of translating a staged piece of theater to the big screen.

This is a special event exclusively for American Express® Cardmembers.

Spike Lee was a fan of the electrifying rock musical Passing Strange since its off-Broadway run at the Public Theater and chose to immortalize the production with the original cast and stage direction. The iconic filmmaker also world premieres his latest documentary, Kobe Doin' Work, at the Festival this year.
