Join us for a live taping of Oprahdemics, an entertaining and fascinating podcast examining iconic moments from The Oprah Winfrey Show within social, historical, and cultural frameworks. Friends, scholars, authors, and fellow Oprah-obsessives Kellie Carter Jackson and Leah Wright Rigueur co-host this new podcast part of the Radiotopia podcast network from PRX.

Special guest and Pulitzer Prize winning culture critic Wesley Morris⁠—host of The New York Times’ Still Processing podcast⁠—will also join the stage. Carter Jackson, Rigueur, and Morris will explore Winfirey's film career as an actress and producer, ranging from The Color Purple to Beloved to A Wrinkle In Time.

Kellie Carter Jackson

Kellie Carter Jackson (Host, Executive Producer) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, focusing on slavery and the abolitionists, political violence, historical film, and Black women’s history. She is the author of “Force & Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence,” which won the James H. Broussard Best First Book Prize and was a finalist for the Stone Book Prize and the Frederick Douglass Prize. Carter Jackson is also co-editor of “Reconsidering Roots: Race, Politics, & Memory,” essays exploring the impact of Alex Haley’s “Roots.” She is the co-host of the Radiotopia podcast “This Day in Esoteric Political History.” Carter Jackson is also a Historian-in-Residence for the Museum of African American History in Boston. She is currently at work on two book manuscripts, “The Remedy: Black Response to White Violence” (Basic Books) and “Losing Laroche: The Story of the Only Black Passenger on the Titanic.”

Leah  Wright Rigueur

Leah Wright Rigueur

Leah Wright Rigueur (Host) is the SNF Agora Institute Associate Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University and a faculty fellow at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Harvard Kennedy School. Her work focuses on 20th Century U.S. political, social, and civil rights history, while her expertise also includes race, political ideology, American political institutions, and the American presidency. She is the author of the award-winning book, “The Loneliness of the Black Republican,” and is currently working on a new book, “Black Collar Criminals.” Rigueur’s writing, commentary, and research has been featured frequently in numerous media outlets including ABC News, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, and The Atlantic.
