On September 11, smoke billowed up from the lower Manhattan skyline. The future was more uncertain than ever, and time seemed to freeze. From the sound of the first plane flying low over Manhattan, to the candles that lit New Yorkers' faces during the aftermath of the attack, epitaph* leads us through the experiences of that tragic day. Filmmaker Lubtchansky uses 71 "digitally painted" press photos and 1 short video in order to create a poetic visual memorial.

Mikael Lubtchansky was born near Paris on February 25, 1972. He developed a fascination with analog and digital image-making in his childhood, and he has been exploring various aspects of documentary filmmaking ever since. Lubtchansky got his start as a second camera assistant in 1993 after graduating from l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière. As a cinematographer and editor, he has worked on documentaries for the Arte and France 5 television networks. epitaph* is his first personal project to be screened in public.
