He started his career writing plays, many of which became the inspiration for his films, including the legendary Madea character. The Madea franchise has grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Tyler has created 17 shows, over 20 feature films and more than 1,500 episodes of television. In 2019, Perry celebrated the historic opening of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. He received an Honorary Oscar in 2021 as the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Governors Award at the 2020 Emmys.

Kelly; and Michelle Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson. She also conducted the final interviews with Representative John Lewis and Cicely Tyson before their passing.
