Featuring an eclectic group of subjects including LGBTQ activists, sex workers, and drag performers, Mala Mala explores the transsexual and transgender communities in Puerto Rico. Directors Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles use stunning cinematography and intimate one-on-one interviews to celebrate this largely overlooked subculture with their feature film debut.
The film also follows the efforts of many of its subjects’ work with the LGBTQ civil rights organization Butterflies Trans Foundation as they help pass Bill 238, a new Puerto Rican law that bans employment discrimination based on sexual and gender orientation.
