2010 Artists Answer Life's Questions

Meet Clifford Ross and Maurizio Galimberti, two artists contributing original art to the Tribeca Art Awards, sponsored by CHANEL.

The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival is delighted that ten acclaimed artists have graciously donated works of art to the Tribeca Film Festival Art Awards. These ten works of art will be presented to the directors who win this year's juried Festival awards, and are also on display through April 28 at Chanel Soho, 134 Spring Street in Manhattan. The Art Awards Gallery is open from 11 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 pm on Sundays.

In an effort to get to know these artists a little better, we asked them to submit their answers to some questions about life, art, films, and inspiration.

Clifford Ross

Does life really imitate art?
In my dreams.

How do locations inspire you?
Through my senses.

Where do you go to be inspired?
I don't. I find myself there.

What film do you go back to repeatedly in your life?
I seem to have gone digital. No more Tri-X.

What film has had an influence on your work?
Oh, you mean "film"! Well, this year, I've been thinking a lot about Stan Brakhage's Dog Star Man, Standish Lawder's Corridor, and Dziga Vertov's Man With a Movie Camera. A bit esoteric, but they do it for me just now...

What is your state of mind right now?
Dazed and confused.

Who are your favorite heroes/heroines in fiction?
Tom Swift, Ahab, and Werner Herzog.

In real life?
Cezanne, Titian, and Werner Herzog.

Maurizio Galimberti

Does life really imitate art?
Ideally, yes!

How do locations inspire you?
If I feel a shiver under my skin, then it's a good location.

Where do you go to be inspired?
In the streets, better if chaotic, and I look carefully.

What film do you go back to repeatedly in your life?
The English Patient, Amarcord by Fellini

What film has had an influence on your work?
Videos from the Bauhaus, Lisbon Story

What is your state of mind right now?
Concentrated

Who are your favorite heroes/heroines in fiction?
Cowboys in old Western movies.

In real life?
And in life, my Mum!
