Tribeca Film Plans Late Year Release for Chris Colfer's Film and Screenwriting Debut, Struck By Lightning

Tribeca Film is thrilled to announce its pickup of the teen dramedy, which celebrated its world premiere at TFF 2012. Written by and starring Chris Colfer, this fresh coming-of-age story also features Allison Janney, Dermot Mulroney, Christina Hendricks and Rebel Wilson.

Tribeca Film is proud to announce the acquisition of Struck by Lightning, the high school movie that marks the screenwriting and film acting debut of Glee’s Chris Colfer and also features such standouts as Allison Janney, Dermot Mulroney, Christina Hendricks and Rebel Wilson. The world premiere of Struck by Lightning took place at TFF 2012 (with celebrities like Glee’s Amber Riley and Harry Potter’s Emma Watson in attendance), and the film received a standing ovation from an enthusiastic TFF audience.

This coming of age “dramedy,” thoughtfully directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), tells the story of Carson Phillips (Colfer), a high senior meant for bigger things than a close-minded town could ever offer. However, destiny intervenes when a bolt of lightning suddenly kills Carson as he stands in his school parking lot. Ruefully acknowledging that life is what happens while you’re busy planning your future, Carson recounts the events in the last few weeks of his life (which includes college deadlines, blackmail, family angst and more) via witty, insightful flashbacks that introduce all of the people whose lives he unexpectedly touched and whose memories will keep him alive.

Struck By Lightning

Geoff Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises, was quick to confirm Tribeca's enthusiasm for Struck by Lightning: “Showcasing his remarkable talents not only as an actor but as a writer and storyteller, Chris Colfer infuses this reinvention of the high school comic-drama with such spirit and joy that he almost makes us fondly nostalgic.” Gilmore continued, “Rousing, fresh, superbly acted by a strong ensemble, and wonderfully directed by Brian Dannelly, we are delighted to be partnering with Chris and his fellow filmmakers to share this new take on a classic genre for a new generation."

Chris Colfer and Brian Dannelly likewise expressed their appreciation for the partnership with Tribeca. Dannelly explained, “I was hoping Struck by Lightning would end up somewhere like Tribeca Film, because I watch films all the time on demand. It's exciting that an independent film like ours can now be seen by so many people—instantly—at the same time that the film is premiering in theaters.” Colfer agreed, adding, “I'm so thrilled to be partnering with a company as passionate about this film as we are.”

Also co-starring Polly Bergen,  Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) and Angela Kinsey (The Office), Struck By Lightning will be released both theatrically and on-demand in late 2012.
