Tribeca Takes Miami: 4 Must-See Events During Art Basel
From New York to Miami Beach, Tribeca’s creators and projects are making their mark on the art world. Here is what you shouldn’t miss in Miami this week.
The first week of December—it's the perfect time to visit Miami. And not just for the sun and the beaches, but for one of the most premiere art fairs in the world (and its notoriously ostentatious parties, as long as your name is on the list).
For its 14th installment in Miami Beach, Art Basel features 267 galleries from 32 countries at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and this doesn't even include the established museums showing blockbuster exhibitions this week, or the countless satellite fairs located all over Miami from Wynwood to the Design District.
Whether you have descended upon Miami to browse Picassos at the convention center, to check out the most cutting-edge creations by emerging artists in Wynwood, or just to be where the party's at, read on for Tribeca's must-see events during Art Basel.
1. Screening of Future Relic 04, directed by Daniel Arsham
With its flooding problems and eroding coastline, does Miami set your mind to wondering about climate change and the future of civilization? If so, you need to see Future Relic, a nine-part film by Miami native Daniel Arsham that envisions a future civilization on Earth following the excavation of the moon and a subsequent, major ecological change.
If you've RSVPed in time, you can check out the screening of the short film Future Relic 04 tonight at the Edition Hotel. Following the screening, Arsham will unveil the new limited-edition relic accompanying the film (previously released relics include materials made of volcanic ash), and there will be a DJ set by A-TRAK. The reception will be hosted by Jefferson Hack, Emmanuel Perrotin, Arturo Castro, and Rose McGowan. Future Relic 03, starring Juliette Lewis, premiered at TFF 2015.

2. Numa Perrier’s Florida Water at Yeelen Gallery
Need to step away from the venerable stretch of art fairs on Miami Beach? Go to Little Haiti to experience Florida Water, a film and installation by Numa Perrier. Set in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the film originated with a faded photograph of a ritual performed by the artist's mother and a group of women clad in red dresses. Combining images along with her own fragmented memories, Perrier constructs a visual collage and understanding of her mother, whom she did not meet until she was 17.
Perrier was one of seven filmmakers selected by this year's inaugural THROUGH HER LENS: The Tribeca Chanel Women's Filmmaker Program, which aims to support emerging female writers and directors based in the US. Florida Water is part of the exhibition what’s INSIDE HER never dies…a Black Woman’s Legacy, featuring a group of 25 artists.

3. Pop-up art installation and screening of Ellis, directed by JR
Regardless of where it is installed or its scale, JR's art functions as a poignant conversation about citizens of the Earth and their stories. With an exhibition and film focusing on immigrants from the early 19th and early 20th century, his work could not be more timely considering the thousands of refugees displaced by civil war in the Middle East and the heated debates in the US concerning immigration and xenophobia.
Earlier this year, JR covered the walls of Ellis Island with archival photographs of immigrants whose pursuit of a new life led them to New York over a century ago. The photos, in addition to functioning as an installation, provided the backdrop for Ellis, a 14-minute film starring Robert De Niro and written by Eric Roth. Until December 7, you can see photographs from the exhibition and screenings of the film at Galerie Perrotin’s pop-up space in the Design District.

4. Born & Bred screening at the Bushwick Collective Block Party
Ready to see some art outside the traditional walls of a fair or a gallery? Make your way to Wynwood for the Bushwick Collective Block Party and catch a screening of Born & Bred, a short documentary detailing the rise of street art in Bushwick. The film focuses on Joseph Ficalora, founder of the Bushwick Collective, and the community of artists who worked to better their neighborhood through street art. Born & Bred premiered on TribecaFilm.com earlier this year.
Presented by Basel House and Mana Urban Arts Project, the Bushwick Collective Block Party is a four-day bash focusing on street art and graffiti, with DJs, breakdancing, skateboarding, craft vendors, booze, and more.
