After the Premiere screening: #SOUL50: A 50th Anniversary Tribute to SOUL! hosted by Blair Underwood and featuring performances from Robert Glasper, Lalah Hathaway, Kyle Abraham, DJ Jahi Sundance, Sade Lythcott, Kathleen Cleaver and The Last Poets: Abiodun Oyewole, Umar Bin Hassan and Felipe Luciano.
From 1968 to 1973, the public-television variety show SOUL!, guided by the enigmatic producer and host Ellis Haizlip, offered an unfiltered, uncompromising celebration of black literature, poetry, music, and politics—voices that had few other options for national exposure, and, as a result, found the program an improbable place to call home. With participants’ recollections and a bevy of great archival clips, Mr. SOUL! captures a critical moment in culture whose impact continues to resonate.
Melissa Haizlip’s art films and shorts have been funded and exhibited by museums and festivals around the world. Through collaborations with many filmmakers, Samuel Pollard has brought programming that illuminates the black experience in America to both television and theatrical audiences for more than 30 years.
