This Weekend's Indies: 'Inside Llewyn Davis,' 'The Last Days on Mars,' and 'Swerve'

Inside Llewyn DavisThe newest film from the Coen Brothers has been garnering praise since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Oscar Isaac plays Llewyn Davis, a down-on-his-luck folk singer just trying to make it through the winter. This all-star cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, and (of course) John Goodman. Like the film, the soundtrack is sure to please.

The Last Days on Mars: In the tradition of films like the Alien series, this sci-fi horror flick uses space as the ultimate isolation point. When a crew of astro-scientists land on Mars to collect data, they soon learn they are not alone and must stop whatever it is from coming to earth. What could possibly go wrong? Liev Schreiber and Olivia Williams star.

Swerve: "No good deed goes unpunished," or so says this Australian film. David Lyons stars as a man trying to do the right thing, even as he gets caught up with the wrong people. When he turns in a briefcase full of money to a police station, he learns that nothing is as it seems. Jason Clarke (The Great Gatsby) also stars as a cop with dubious motives.
