This Weekend's Indies: 'Her,' 'The Past,' & 'The Selfish Giant'
Opening in limited release today: Spike Jonze's timely love story, two families trying to move past life-changing events, and a kid willing to do anything to make money.
Her: Starring Joaquin Phoenix, this new film from Spike Jonze tells the story of a lonely man who finds a connection in the human interface of his operating system. Scarlett Johansson provides the voice for the Siri-esque personal assistant. The impressive cast also includes Amy Adams and Rooney Mara.
The Past: Asghar Farhadi follows up his award-winning film A Separation with The Past (Le Passé). The film tells the story of a divorced woman who begins a relationship with a man whose wife is in a coma. Their kids resist this change, and when her ex-husband comes back to Paris, everything comes to a head. Bérénice Béjo (The Artist, OSS 117) plays the lead.
The Selfish Giant: Clio Barnard's second feature tells the story of a working class preteen who finds himself in constant trouble. After being kicked out of school, he and his best friend start working at a scrapyard. His quest to gain approval from shady characters leads to unimaginable acts that will color his life forever.
