How Can You See “The Best Indies of 2012” (According to Indiewire)?
Indiewire’s top-notch editors have rounded up over 200 critics’ scores of all the movies released so far in 2012—at festivals, in theaters, on VOD—and three movies from Tribeca Film have made Criticwire’s cut (with two topping individual lists). We think you’ll like them, too.
Three diverse films that Tribeca is bringing to audiences everywhere have been honored as critics’ picks on Criticwire’s mid-year report on the Best Indie Movies of 2012, published today on Indiewire. We think they are pretty great too!
“Like Die Hard meets 24 by way of Taken” (slashfilm), Sleepless Night is a frenetic French thriller that takes place over the course of one night in a labyrinthine nightclub. At its core is one father’s desperate attempt to save his son from a mob of drug-dealing gangsters. It’s as exciting as it sounds!
In Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story, director Raymond De Felitta revisits a civil rights documentary made by his father Frank in the 1960s. Using two families as parallel storylines, the intimate portrait raises the question: Over the past fifty years, how much progress has the South really made?
Side By Side takes a look at the current realities of digital filmmaking. Using firsthand interviews between producer Keanu Reeves and some of the most iconic directors of our time—Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, James Cameron, and Christopher Nolan among them—director Chris Keneally has “crafted a passionate and joyful celebration of why we go to the movies.”

While filming a documentary on racism in Mississippi in 1965, Frank De Felitta forever changed the life of an African-American waiter and his family. More than 40 years later, Frank's son Raymond (director of City Island) returns to the site of his father's film to examine the repercussions of their fateful encounter. This intensely personal film about children struggling to understand their parents is also a heartbreaking portrait of the legacy of intolerance. The story will also be the subject of a hourlong Dateline episode on July 15.
