Madison Square Music: The Wailin’ Jennys
Forget Lilith Fair, get your dose of sensitive-chicks-with-acoustic-guitars at this free outdoor show by Canada’s Wailin’ Jennys. A mix of folk, pop, and pretty harmonies—the ladies (none of whom are named Jenny) recently sang with Garrison Keillor on A Prairie Home Companion. What perfect background music to listen to while waiting in line for a burger at Shake Shack!
Where: Madison Square Park, 23rd to 26th Streets, between 5th and Madison, Manhattan
When: Wednesday, July 28, 7:00 PM

Underground Gallery: London Transport Posters 1920s–1940s
Before “Mind the Gap” became synonymous with the London Underground, there was this promotional campaign. The slogans weren’t quite as catchy—“London’s Transport at London’s Service,” “Quickly Away, Thanks to Pneumatic Doors”—still, the 20-odd Art Deco-style posters, highlighting advancements and efficiency in public transportation, do look pretty darn cool. Pictured: Power poster by graphic artist E. McKnight Kauffer.
Where: Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street, Manhattan
When: Wednesday, July 28
Price: $20, or free on Fridays nights from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
The Swell Season at Prospect Park Bandshell
There was once a little Irish film called Once, a love story starring two relatively unknown musicians, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, that ended up winning an Oscar for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly. That was back in 2008, but Hansard (from The Frames) and Irglova (a Czech pianist) are still making beautiful music together as The Swell Season, which features a rotating group of musicians on strings and horns. Indie folk band The Low Anthem opens.
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, enter at Prospect Park West and 9th Street, Brooklyn
When: Friday, July 30, 6:00 PM

Martini and Wine Mondays at Fatty Crab
It’s always hard to drag yourself into the office on Mondays, and even harder after a fab summer weekend at the beach. Fatty Crab’s Upper West Side location is making the start of your workweek a bit easier to swallow, with $8 Martinis (gin or vodka) and a selection of nice wines gently priced at $25/bottle from noon til 11 PM. That’s on top of the regular happy hour (from 4 PM to 7 PM), when you can drown yourself in specialty cocktails for a mere $7 and snack on $4 spicy wings or sliders for just $5. (And you’re just seven blocks from the Loews at 84th Street!)
Where: Fatty Crab UWS, 2170 Broadway, Manhattan
When: Mondays, noon to 11 PM
Price: Martinis, $8; select bottles of wine, $25
Red Hook Summer Movies: JAWS
We know, it’s a hike to get to Red Hook (hint: take the IKEA water ferry there and the B61 back to the subway in Downtown Brooklyn). But what the nabe lacks in public transportation, it more than makes up for with an awesome waterfront location—an appropriate spot to screen this classic summer thriller starring a “mindless eating machine” that terrorizes the East Coast. Speaking of mindless eating, gourmet popcorn from Home/Made will be on offer for just a buck.
Where: Valentino Pier, Coffey Street at Ferris Street, Brooklyn
When: Tuesday, August 3, 8:30 PM
Price: Free!
