Time For Honesty: I Have Comic Book Fatigue

spiritThe Spirit is a seminal comic-book series by godfather of the genre (and one of the inspirations for Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning, will-it-ever-become-a-film, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay) Will Eisner. The fact, however, that Frank Miller, the comic book artist who never met a prostitute—aptly summed up in the WHORES WHORES WHORES cartoon—he couldn't draw, has adapted the noir for a Christmas release has some ladies worried. The fairly ubiquitous teaser posters, which feature actresses from Eva Mendes to Scarlett Johansson with sayings like "Do I look like a bad girl to you" and "On your knees then" scrawled onto their cheeks in comic book script. There's something icky about these posters, maybe it's due to the fact that these women are presented like pretty catchphrases, and to be honest, they just remind me that in general, I am not the target audience for things like this film (which, alas, its a common summer-feeling). But it's sad, because I could be, if they were based on wit and mystery and not just fantasy sex appeal.

Speaking of whores, The Frisky has a long list of prostitutes in film throughout the years. If you're looking for an Oscar nomination, ladies, hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold is the way to go!

And as an antidote to all this nerd-bait, I want to note that bloggy crush Karina Longworth at Spout.com, again, has a great post on Women and Comic Con. Good stuff.
