The illustrious, multitalented Dave Eggers, author and founder of publishing juggernaut McSweeney's, turns his eye towards art for this exhibit in Tribeca. According to Eggers, the art he chose includes "three elements: 1) an image, 2) some words (usually referring to the image), 3) a sense of humor." As you might guess from that description, and as Eggers acknowledges in his curator's note, much of the work also shares similarities with cartooning. Sparked by an idea for a McSweeney's issue, the exhibit features a wide range of contributors (many not known for their artwork), including David Mamet, Leonard Cohen, David Berman, Shel Silverstein, Henry Darger, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It promises to provide a fine example of art at its loosest and most casual, gathering hard-to-find pieces that enthrall with their humor and strangeness.
