Beth Janson: The Good Pitch

Over the years, filmmakers working on “social issue-driven” documentaries have been slowly refining an outreach and distribution model for their work. Maligned by commercially-minded funders, these trailblazers realized long before Facebook was ubiquitous—even before (gasp) MySpace—that it was possible to find an audience for a film. And not just find an audience, but find the audience that will be just as passionate about the film as you are!

Great filmmakers are able to tap into a humanity that transcends the asinine categories that drive traditional marketing. In this context, “grass roots” is such an apt term, despite its low-tech connotations (grass is everywhere and it thrives in all kinds of climates all over the earth).

The Good Pitch, a program of the Britdoc Foundation, takes “grass roots” to a new level. A one-day live event, it’s an innovative forum where filmmakers pitch their films and associated outreach campaigns to expert participants from charities, foundations, brands and media. It’s an amazing opportunity for filmmakers, and Tribeca Film Institute is thrilled to be the host for the New York City event this spring! If you are working on a documentary, you should check it out and apply now. The deadline is February 8, so don't miss out. Good luck!
