When fate brings schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed “low life scum” Naoise and Liam OG, a hip-hop act like no other is born. Rapping in their native Irish Language, Kneecap erupts as the unexpected figurehead of a civil rights movement to save their Irish mother tongue. Meanwhile, the unlikely trio cheekily navigate police, paramilitaries and politicians all intent upon silencing their defiant sound. Though their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies, triumph is for the taking.
Kneecap plays themselves in this fierce and very funny, sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic with Michael Fassbender taking a bow as the charismatic father figure. This debut narrative feature from Rich Peppiatt is a punchy delight.––Simone Ling
