Synopsis

On the surface, the Smiths are an average American family, with a happily married mother and father, a moody 16-year-old daughter, and a distracted 18-year-old son. But patriarch Matt Smith appears a bit on edge, and the family is eerily damaged by something in its past. One night when a sweet-talking preacher carrying a briefcase arrives at their home after his car is disabled on a nearby road, it seems like this Christian man's presence may be just the breath of fresh air the family needs. But are the Smiths are ready for the atonement this neighborly guest has in store?

This creepy thriller, set in the deep woods of Texas suburbia, moves at a steady pace and culminates in an unexpected reckoning of the family's dark and horrific past. The ensemble cast of newcomers helps keep the story taut with suspense, while first-time director/writer Philip Gelatt creates a haunting portrait of a family that may not deserve to escape its sins.

About The Director(s)

PHILIP GELATT was born in Wisconsin, where he misspent his youth in front of videogames and fantasy novels. He earned a degree in cinema and anthropology from NYU and began his career writing for Dark Horse comics and original graphic novels like Labir Days and the forthcoming Petrograd for Oni Press. The Bleeding House is his directorial debut.

Director Statement

With The Bleeding House I was hoping to create an atmospheric film that delivered both as a thriller and as an intellectually stimulating film. In writing the script, I took as my point of departure the horror sub-genre of the slasher film. I stripped it down to its most simple elements (a man with a knife, a final female survivor) and then used those as seeds to explore what else the genre could be made to do.

In directing the film, I wanted to keep the style spare and minimal and let the characters and atmosphere do most of the work. I wanted to create a film that would bear repeat viewings not because of any shocking twists or narrative tricks, but because the characters have both psychological and metaphorical depth. I wanted it to be a film that would leave an audience thinking as well as entertained.

The horror genre and its slightly more respectable step-brother, the thriller, have always been my favorite genres, both in film and literature, and The Bleeding House is my honest attempt at exploring them in a personal and, hopefully, unique as well as satisfying way.
