Synopsis

What do Barbie dolls and the history of the Jewish people have in common? Quite a lot, according to filmmaker Tiffany Shlain, whose documentary uses the doll's Jewish inventor Ruth Handler as a jumping-off point for an 18-minute riff on the heretofore unseen connections between Jewish culture and Ken's plastic girlfriend. Narrated by Peter Coyote, the film mixes archival footage, graphics, animation, Barbie dioramas, and slam poetry to tell two seemingly disparate histories that nevertheless converge in unexpected ways.

Director Statement

We want to start an argument, in fact many arguments. We want to spark a new discussion about what it means to be an American Jew in the 21st Century, or what it means to be a member of any tribe today. We are interested in encouraging a larger conversation to examine issues of belief and identity in America. We have no agenda except to get people talking. We hope that you'll email us and express your thoughts on The Tribe (tiffany@tribethefilm.com) or contribute to the conversation on our Web Talmud at www.tribethefilm.com. On the website you can also order our Unorthodox Discussion kit that includes: a DVD of The Tribe, a companion guide to the film entitled "The Guide from the Perplexed," and conversation cards with images from the film paired with themes explored in the film, such as "guilt", "kosher" and "Israel." Enjoy.
