Synopsis

In Eric Nicholas' flesh-crawling, creepy tale of a 21st-century peeping tom gone bad, Doug (Colin Hanks) uses readily available surveillance equipment to spy on Amy (Ana Claudia Talancon). We're taken along with him as he captures every moment of her daily life through cameras he has placed throughout her apartment, including two in the bathroom. The audience (and Doug) watch as Amy suffers through a breakup, watches movies, dips her toe into a new relationship, takes a shower, and wonders if Doug is her real knight in shining armor. They do seem to share the same taste in movies and bands, and he has an uncanny ability to show up at just the right moment. OK, so his palms are clammy and there's something slightly off about him, but nobody's perfect, especially in modern Los Angeles. The film, which was shot entirely through hidden cameras, manages to maintain a sense of objectivity, even as fear settles into the plot like the Southern California haze. Showing sure-handedness in this unconventional format, Nicholas exploits both our fears of being watched and our compulsion to watch. But when a new man appears on the scene Doug goes even further over the line. Amy is his reality show and he isn't about to change the channel.

+About The Director

A native of Canada, Eric Nicholas studied briefly at USC's School of Cinema-Television after graduating from business school. In 1997, Nicholas sold his first original screenplay to producer Pierre David (Scanners, Internal Affairs). Later that year, Nicholas moved to Los Angeles to take a stab at professional screenwriting. From 1998-2004, he worked for some of Hollywood's top producers, including Alcon Entertainment and Escape Artists, where his script Diary is currently set to star Jennifer Aniston. In 2004, Nicholas wrote his first feature Alone With Her, which he planned to self-finance. But the script quickly found backing in producer Tom Engelman (The Last Samurai). By summer 2005, production was under way starring Colin Hanks and Ana Claudia Talancon.

+Director Statement

The story of Alone with Her began a couple of years ago when I stumbled across a website selling dirt-cheap spy equipment to the general public: $50 hidden video cameras, $75 telephone recorders, $60 lock-pick guns. I went on to discover hundreds of these websites, as well as retail spy shops across America and Europe. I was blown away. Anyone with fifty bucks could secretly watch and listen to me inside my own home. This terrifying potential for invasion of individual privacy drove me to write what is essentially a 21st century cautionary tale. As a director, I wanted to create a new kind of movie experience that feels completely real and voyeuristic. To that end, we shot the entire film through the stalker's hidden cameras. From first frame to last, we, the audience, are in the stalker's shoes, complicit in everything he does-from secretly watching our victim to the violence that ultimately follows. Over the past year, I've learned about many real-life accounts of stalkers watching and terrorizing their victims using the spy equipment depicted in our film. My hope is that Alone with Her will not only raise the hairs on the back of your neck, but also raise awareness.
