Synopsis

First-time director Omar Broadway, collaborating with codirector Douglas Tirola on the "outside," shocks audiences with a film documenting life as an inmate inside a high-security unit of Newark's Northern State Prison. Newark, New Jersey is one of the top 10 most violent cities in the United States, and in Newark, the most dangerous corner is 15th and William. That's where Omar Broadway could be found before he was incarcerated in 1999 and sent to the prison's maximum-security gang unit, where inmates are allowed out of their cells for only an hour a week and the occasional shower. Broadway secretly obtained a video camera sometime in 2004 and began to document-along with his bunkmate, Buddy Randolph-life on the inside. What follows is a film that transports viewers into their tiny cell, where each and every photograph and object carries great significance, and where the best view of the rest of the unit is through cracks in the door. Even with such a limited point of view, Broadway manages to capture incriminating images of guards abusing other inmates, and his exposé set off an unexpected chain of events. The film combines Broadway's claustrophobic camerawork with saturated, colorful shots of his former neighborhood, where his dedicated mother leads viewers through her version of the events surrounding the contraband camera. Rapid-fire editing and a bouncing soundtrack add to the effect of Broadway's devastating footage. Everyone from FBI agents and the prison warden to activists and filmmakers weigh in on the significance of Broadway's feat-an eye-opening documentary about the prison system told from the inside.

Look at his rap sheet on the NJ DOC website. I guess nobody thought to interview the victims of all his crimes to see how their lifes have been changed by this savage animal. Prisons to nice for this guy.

He should get jail Time for making his film. Sympathy? Not here.

That was the most ridiculous documentary I've EVER seen. Geez! The producers should be convicted as well, for robbing me of the last hour n half.

I feel that the issue isn't about if these inmates are good citizens. They are in segregated cell block in a state prison it's obvious they belong there. However no matter what the violation or crime commited society has the responsibility to expadite the duration of these inmate sentence in humane manner. They call prison rehabilitation ceners, were is the rehab. Anyone who advocates this kind of treatment of anyone has their own issues and a obvious void to fill in their own minds and harts. Also treatment like this is the reason the American jail system is so redundant advocating this out right disregard for policy and procedure just adds to a vicous cycle that helps no one and for one of the commenters after being trivealized like that I wouldn't expect anything less than those same inmates to get out and victimize the se society that failed them. You should be ashamed of the inhumane comments you mad I wonder if in your heart you feel as if you a good person?

Justin Kredible on July 15, 2010 08:46 AM
Both omar n buddy have mile long rap sheets. They only show the end of all the altercations and what they want the public to see. But what actually started these altercations in the first place. If they locked in or followed the officers directions they would get there ass beat..........

I watched this movie on HBO last night. It looked like the camera would be turned on when the prisoners would hear something, so it looked like there was extreme force used, but you didn’t get to see what happened before the camera was turned on. Furthermore, it blew my mind that the Mother was proud of her “Blood” son, and not once did ANYONE mention why they were in jail (the beginning of the movie tells us that one was in for carjacking with a sawed off shotgun) nor did anyone express remorse. Unbelievable and sad.
Genius by Le'Rae-Leading Lady on July 15, 2010 02:37 PM
I loved this documentary. Absolutely brilliant and courageous young men. By no means am I pardoning the incidents that landed them in the prison in the first place, but I have to applaud the bravery that it HAD to have taken to sneak in a contraband camera to a high-security unit in a major state institution. For all of those comments about how they are criminals who should stay out of the system to avoid injustice, remember that many leaders of important movements and protests were imprisoned. Are Dr. King's Letters from Birmingham Jail as ridiculous as some claim the Omar Broadway Film to be? This documentary is Omar and Buddy's version of the infamous Letters from Birmingham, if you will, only in a different time period and facing a different issue. Having personal experience with the injustice of the American Justice System, I feel as though this docu-film is an excellent look at the innermost workings of a system as corrupt as it is old, made even better by the perspective from which it is told. Genius.

this documentary was a discrase, they never expose why they were in there nor did they say or show why the guards reacted in such a way. iam not excusing the officers behavior yes the matter should be looked into, however these are gang members they actually thought they would receive recognition for this film why, are you kidding me. they woke up in the morning with a ritual yelling who's house and the response was of course bloods house. these young men may not want to be treated as animals then why behave like one, you are being punished and if the conditions make you that angry stay the hell out of prison and make a difference. you expect better treatment make a difference the video did not acomplish nothing but for word to spread to every and any correctional facility that these guys are snitches and because of the environment anything could happen and it will be a long time before anyone gets prosecuted if anyone does.
Truth Be told by IreeI on July 17, 2010 01:11 AM
Yeah,I know Omar and for all you that are up here posting like you think it's just cause they want out it's more to it!The jail system in Jersey is messed up C.O's use force when not needed and so do officers. You need to see how many of them done killed or abuse somebody without a real reason and they still have their jobs.Prisoners still have rights just like a regular citizen and until you wlked in their shoes you can't judge why they bang or did what they did!but, people can change me and O grew up on da same streets. If you wasn't hard you could not survive. It was more to banging when niggas first got in than just killing or doing other destructive things.Back then it was about protecting your neighborhood and sticking together. As time changed and went on Police do some messed up stuff too I have witnessed them brutalize attack and kill for no reason. So if they are to Protect and serve and set an example. What Kind of example you think is being set when you are young coming up?They aree licensed to kill and threaten you on a everyday basis and if you report it.You and your family is in danger cause the system sticks together so as young adolescents needing protection they stuck together.I'm not justifying their jackets but there is more to the story than you all know. It's like if we can't be respected why give it.As a female I have been threatened on numerous occasions by police and I don't have a record.Just another case of them feeling superior with a badge. Not all are like that but there are some.Trust me I Know.
How did he get the camera in? by Adam on July 17, 2010 09:03 PM
Who cares about all of that, how the hell did he get that camera in there? Was there ever an investigation that published a report of what happened?
left me in tears by 1nAmillion on July 17, 2010 11:26 PM
i do not understand why does it take ten men to restrain one person? this is clearly abuse and inhumane, and simply a power struggle. it is obvious that the objective is not restraint but to invoke recognition of power because a person can easily be restrained with a taser which costs way less than a team of officers that we're paying for. yes they are criminals and are paying their debt by being locked up, but they are still human not animals. lets face it america treats terrorists like foreign royalty and their own like animals. its basically legal slavery that our tax dollars pay for.
waste of time by Martin on July 21, 2010 12:18 PM
I thought this film was pointless really. The footage they showed of abuse was really correctional officers doing their jobs. The first footage they had of so called abuse was two gentlemen “egging” on 10 officer even after being maced. These men could be murders or have one of the weapons that the film makers showed were not difficult to obtain. The officers did punch the men, got them on the ground and detained them. I really didnt see any brutality. It was pathetic how they complained about the food they recieved and how they had to use the bathroom in a joint room. IT IS JAIL! It is not supposed to be a comfortable place you did something terrible wrong like armed robbery to get there. Sorry if the accomidations are not up to standards. To answer several questions on why its takes 10 men to restrain one. Its because that one is waiting for any of those 10 to mess up so he can stab them with the weapons they have created.

this is ridiculous.i am and have been a c.o in arizona for the last 7 years. if you feel really bad for these guys that are locked up for killing and robbing innocent hard working people, you just got gamed by an inmate.these inmates are not in prison by accident!!!!they are there by choice.i grew up in the hood too, so i dont wanna hear about how hard it is because at the end of the day we make our own decisions.me and my brother were raised in the same household and he is constantly getting locked up.im not. life is hard you just have to be willing to work hard to be able to enjoy it.the easy way out is for punks.now i have to go back to work and listen to people threaten me just for doing my job.
this film is laughable by Disgusted on July 29, 2010 08:06 AM
I'm home sick from work today and watching this joke of a film. One thing that all these criminals seem to have in common is that THEY are always the victims. A joke!!! Maybe the next time you drive through Newark, one of these "poor souls" will be so kind as to car jack you and maybe even put a bullet in your head for the "thrill of it." Our prison system is a joke! You're a criminal Omar!!! U 2 Buddy! You lose your rights the moment you break the law and you've been breaking the law for a LONG time! Hope they don't let you out because I don't see how you coulod possibly be a productive member of society. I sincerely hope that if you get out, you both prove me wrong...but I doubt it!
Sad film by Rae on August 02, 2010 04:59 AM
It is all sad, the systemic poverty that these young men experience as little children, the lack of an adequate educational system that could have helped to develop Omar's talents and possibly prevent the development of criminal tendencies in young men like Omar. Sad that the conditions in the United States prison system create animalistic behavior in their officers. Sad that we have a correctional system that cannot "correct" anything.

We know these guys are not sunday school boys. Are U?However, our govenment are mandated to uphold;not violate anyone human rights. I don't advocate violence.Do U? One day the Omar Broadway and Buddy will be back out on the streets. One thing I've learned as a Behavior Specialist is that when treated like an animal......We in society will surely pay the price of a few uneducated guards. Take this opportunity to teach/learn instead of beating;staying ignorant of a criminals mind.Get a clue your way never did work. Dig it?Get a clue. Read your history.
OMAR<3 by DanaBby on August 05, 2010 04:56 PM
It's wrong, point. blank. period. all you people talkin that trash, you go to jail and get treated like an animal. yes , people make mistakes, and they deserve to be in jail, however, this does not mean they should be brutaly beatin, when it's clear they are not even resisting. that's ridiculous. Omar and Buddy should be applauded.
I love Omar! by NickInAtl on August 17, 2010 05:39 AM
I can't help it- Omar was so sexy to me! In the beginning, when he was doing the boxing in the mirror- was a major turn on! I know I'm wrong- but sorry I love bad boys! I love his accent! And the way he cried when he talked about his Mom- that's a passionate thug right there who loves with all his heart. Hit me up Omar!!

The bottom moral to this wonder story is. If this were you can you be able to do this. How well are you connected. Great law suit hope he changes his mind and turn his life away. Ask to drop his flag on national tv. Other words drop out the blood with a purpose to change his life and end this disgusting filthy gangs that no seems to or try to end and defeat . Cell phones smoking weed and giving co packs of newports your really concerned about his life and choice. See the bigger picture can I do this too in prision? Can this happen to me in prison? What my crime was a minster meaner and it's was my first charged would it have been looked different. No showers for days no dinner on time thanksgiving day are you or can you be fine with it. There's different levels of crime ok I understand that take this film and see yourself in it. More to the pie you haunt taste. When our government that you work for pay taxes too is will be and never will change is currupted. They get drug cellphones even mate with co even pay co to add charges to others and mess there leaving time. Money can sell out water to the ocean. Even a gun could Pass if you got the right money . You got me,,,
both sides of the fence by rannotta on June 27, 2011 03:43 AM
it is true you can get anything u want in prison.....as a formar inmate...you also have too look at those guards. they are people too, they get the job and then every day some inmate curses yells and is rude..... not to mention they might get hurt or killed... in my own personal knowlege if you treat the guards with respect they in turn will give you respect. the guards also learn who the troublemakers are an like people they inturn dont want to help someone who the day before may have spit on them....But all that said i thought it was a very very good film
Eyes Wide Open by Real Talk on July 21, 2011 07:37 AM
Man vs God!!! Man can not judge on moral behavior nor correct anothers when the true challenge starts within themselves. Majority of inmates are turning out worse than when they first entered. For simple minded individuals, Prison is a CORRECTIONAL center and not a TORTURE facility. The CO's are to blame when abuse is taking place and no constructive action is being upheld to protect the inmates. Society suffers behind the ignorance!! Open you eyes
