How-To: Watch TFF Films Online

Tags: Tribeca Online Film Festival  Streaming Room

Starting April 12, the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival’s Streaming Room will officially open its virtual doors to the American public. This means everyone from New York City to California can take their pick of select Tribeca Film Festival titles to watch from the comfort of their own home, all for free!

Okay, okay—I know we’re all excited. But first, here are a few things you’ll need to know about reserving your virtual seat.

Details are below, but here are 5 easy steps:

1. Make sure you are eligible to make a reservation today (April 12 for American Express cardmembers, April 17 for downtown residents, April 18 for all U.S. residents).

2. Make sure you have a My Tribeca account, and are logged in.

3. Make a reservation for a 24-hour screening window.

4. On the day of your reservation, log in within the first 12 hours of availability.

5. Watch your movie anytime within those 24 hours.

Who can make a reservation?

Reservations start April 12 for American Express® cardmembers, and April 17 for downtown Manhattan residents. Reservations will be available to everyone in the US on April 18.

Between April 12 and April 16, visitors will need to enter in a valid American Express card number above the schedule box to make reservations. On April 17, visitors will need to enter in a valid downtown Manhattan zip code to make reservations.

Beginning April 18, anyone will be able to make reservations. That means you, cinephile out in Oregon! And you, film-lover in North Dakota! Literally anyone within the United States can watch films in the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival, but you have to make a reservation first.

Great! So how do I make a reservation?

Visit Tribeca (Online)’s Streaming Room to find a full list of films that can be viewed online on our ‘lobby’ page. Browse to a film’s Streaming Room page to see a full schedule of Online screenings.

To make a reservation, simply click on the ‘Reserve a seat’ button under the screening window you’d like to reserve a ‘virtual seat’ for. If you’re already logged in to your My Tribeca account, a seat will be reserved and the schedule box will show ‘Seat Reserved’ for that screening.

If you’re not logged in to your My Tribeca account, a login box will pop up and prompt you for your username and password. If you do not have a My Tribeca account, simply click on ‘Register’, where you’ll be taken to our account creation page. All you’ll need is your e-mail address, desired password and zip code. Once you’ve created your account, close the registration window and login to your new account.

After logging in, a seat will be reserved and the schedule box will show ‘Seat Reserved’ for that screening.

And what does this reservation mean?

Reservations are for one 24-hour film-screening window. With a reservation, you can watch the film anytime within that 24-hour window. Each film has scheduled screening windows listed on its Streaming Room and Film Guide page.

Please note: Reservations do not guarantee a ‘virtual seat.’ In order to ensure that reservations are used, reservation holders will need to check in to their screening within the first 12 hours of the screening window to guarantee their ‘virtual seat’ for this screening.

How many movies can I reserve a ‘virtual seat’ for?

You can make reservations for as many screenings as you’d like, but only one reservation per screening.

How do I watch the films that I have reserved a seat for?

You’ll receive a reminder e-mail at the start of each of your reserved screening windows with a handy link straight to the film.

Come back to the film’s Streaming Room  page anytime during your reserved screening window and log in to start watching the film. You can even watch films on your iPad! Remember, though, to check in to your screenings within the first 12 hours; otherwise, you will risk losing your seat!

To check in and watch the films that you reserved a seat for, reservation holders simply have to login during the first 12 hours of the screening window and confirm their reservation; the film need not be watched until later in the screening window. Any reservations not claimed within the first 12 hours of a screening window will be released to the public.

We really hope this will help you figure out just how easy it is to watch Tribeca Film Festival titles without being present in New York City. Reserve your virtual seat before it’s too late—these guys will get snatched up quick!

How do we stream the film's from the UK. Is it possible?
broken link by Margaret on April 12, 2011 10:45 AM
FYI: The first link to the "Streaming Room" under "Great!..." is broken - has a space instead of a "c" in word Tribeca.
Thanks! by Editors on April 12, 2011 10:50 AM
We fixed the broken link... And unfortunately, we do not have rights to stream the films outside the U.S. Sorry about that!
Unable to View Heist by jknyc001 on April 13, 2011 01:26 PM
Have a reserved seat for Heist on 4/13 at 11am. Unable to view. What's happening? Thanks
RE: Unable to View Heist by Katharine on April 13, 2011 01:34 PM
Hi there! You might have to refresh the page before you can view the film. If you are logged in to My Tribeca, it will save your reservation if you refresh or close and then reopen the browser. Did that work?
where to watch the film? by Jill on April 13, 2011 03:32 PM
Once I get the film, can I watch it on my TV or does itjust get streamed to a computer?
Tribeca (Online) Film Festival by Kristin McCracken on April 13, 2011 03:53 PM
Hi Jill -- The (Online) films are streamed to your computer. Maybe you can hook your computer to your TV?

I am trying to see the Heist and after I login, and attempt to reserve a time (for the current showing), it asks me to login again. How can I see the movie?

Will The Union by Cameron Crowe be a film available for viewing in the online Festival streaming room and reservations available on the 18th to those of us outside NY or who don't have American Express card?
The Union by Kristin McCracken on April 14, 2011 06:06 PM
No, I'm sorry. The Union is a free event in NYC on April 20, but it will not be available online.

Streaming live events outside US? by Claudia.Sondergaard on April 17, 2011 09:47 AM
Hey, so the movies can't be watched online from Europe I gather :( but how about the live event?
Live Events by kmccrack on April 17, 2011 10:00 AM
Hi Claudia -- Yes, live events will be available everywhere - the only geo-targeted restrictions are on the films themselves. (Also, you can watch HEIST from anywhere - give it a try!)
for free?? by Dana on April 19, 2011 02:41 PM
how come it says its free but you have to sign up using a credit card? this is very confusing
no credit card required by kmccrack on April 19, 2011 03:17 PM
The credit card verification was only required during the American Express early reservation period. You do not have to enter a credit card anymore. Please refresh your browser, or quit and reopen it. Thanks!
24 hour window by Sara on April 21, 2011 07:00 AM
Can I start watching a film during the 24 hour window, or do I need to finish watching it before the 24 hour window finishes? For example, if my window is from Friday 3:00pm to Saturday 3:00pm, can I start watching the film at 2:45pm on Saturday? Or do I need to finish watching it by 3:00pm on Saturday? Thank you.
RE: 24 hour window by Katharine Relth on April 21, 2011 10:35 AM
Hi Sara! If you begin the film any time within the screening window you should be able to continue to watch the page as long as you DO NOT REFRESH THE PAGE or navigate away from that screen, or stop the film after the screening window has ended. Most screenings (except the first screenings of each film) are from 6am - 6am EST to try to prevent this issue from happening, but our video player should continue to function as long as you adhere to these guides.

only black screen appears by librnstn2000 on April 23, 2011 04:34 AM
Hi, I've checked-in/reserved a seat for a few short films that have long screening periods online here are supposed to be playing now. However, I've only been able to watch one, and the others that are supposed to be accessible only have black opaque screens without any buttons to play. I've also tried to refresh and that won't work. Is there a technical error, or does that mean that the screening is no longer available because the number of passes have been used-up? There's no error/other message about this on my screen.
Nothing on the screen by tribecaas11 on April 23, 2011 05:43 PM
Same here I have not been able to watch except for a black screen. Says I am checked in :-(

Streaming Room problems by Josh on April 23, 2011 06:18 PM
Hi everyone- If you are having issues watching films in the Streaming Room, please send an email to our support line here: online@tribecafilmfestival.org Our staff can best assist you through this email address.
Technical Difficulties??? by mikey on April 25, 2011 02:27 PM
Nothing but problems since 4/21. Unable to view Rabies on 4/22...on 4/23 saw The Ride...on 4/24 thru 4/25 unable to view either Terms or Year Zero...have sent emails to Online and posted here...all we get is 'we are experiencing tech diff' but no resolution. Why not just post these vids on YouTube...have no problems there! If this is 1st season for TFF to use their own streaming room, then need more staff to assist or extend viewing periods for unlucky victims of 'technical difficulties'! And a place to vent about this too!!
If someone answered email it would be helpful by Linda on April 27, 2011 09:44 AM
You ask people to email: online@tribecafilmfestival.org, but no one replies. Why don't you actually provide some useful information or at least answer your emails? You don't even respond to twitter, even though tribecafilm is constantly posting stuff.
Trying out best by kmccrack on April 27, 2011 10:01 AM
We are trying out best. Please email your exact issue to the email address posted, and we will get back to you. The people who run twitter are not customer service people on the online film festival - everyone has their specialty, as it's a big Festival. Linda, what problem are you having?
Donor Unknown by Suzanne53 on April 29, 2011 07:04 AM
I made a reservation, logged on and checked in to view Donor Unknown. I am number 671. What do I need to do now to view the film? Thank you.
