Nude Dudes Score Lewd Laughs in The Auteur

Ron Jeremy offered his personal recipe for fake semen, but the crew behind porn spoof The Auteur politely declined in favor of their own. That was the first secret revealed in the Q+A writer/director James Westby and several primary cast and crew members had with the audience at last night’s world premiere of the film that has the most on-screen penises of any in Tribeca Film Festival history. That’s a record that will be—if you’ll forgive the expression—hard to top.

Mostly, there were the usual questions—how did Melik Malkasian, the star, lose the weight he had gained for the role (he chain-smoked and abstained from avocado), did he learn Italian (no, he had a crew member holding up phonetic cue cards off-camera), what proportion of locals from Westby’s native Portland, Oregon were used in the film (about 75 percent), and had their parents seen the film (yes; in fact, some proud parents were in attendance). Portland, another questioner pointed out, has more per capita strip clubs than any city in the country; in fact, more strip clubs than churches, Westby added, explaining that many of the fake porn actresses in the flick were real-life strippers. “Well,” he explained, “I don’t mean strippers. They’re dancers.” But one, a woman named Viva Las Vegas, belted out “Oh, we’re strippers, baby!” prompting laughs all around.

Westby revealed that his next project will be an adaptation of the 1971 Charles Willeford novel The Burnt Orange Heresy, about amoral art collector Jacques Figueras and his navigation of the art underworld in Miami. When asked after the Q+A whether his new project would top his penis-on-film record. He smiled and gave an enigmatic one-word answer: “Hardly.”
