Magnolia Picks Up Spitzer Doc

Untitled Eliot Spitzer Film

The good news just keeps on coming for TFF 2010 films! This week, Magnolia Pictures acquired U.S. rights to the Untitled Eliot Spitzer Project that screened last month at Tribeca. The juicy doc, directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, TFF 2007), was produced by A&E IndieFilms and Wider Film Projects.

Tribeca audiences, familiar with the epic rise and fall of erstwhile New York governor Eliot Spitzer, were enthusiastic about the work in progress, as were potential distributors. “Alex is the most vital documentarian working today, and this film could be his finest hour,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “It transcends what could have been a salacious expose in lesser hands to be a truly thrilling, masterful work of cinema.”

Following Spitzer’s career from his controversial “Sheriff of Wall Street” showdowns with corrupt financial execs through his election to New York’s highest office to his subsequent reveal as “Client #9” to his eventual resignation, the film includes interviews with key players—most notably, Spitzer himself. Gibney presents an unflinching portrait of the flawed man, while simultaneously questioning the motives behind his takedown.

The film will be released on theatrical and home video platforms, followed by a television broadcast premiere under A&E Network’s feature documentary banner. “After an incredible response at Tribeca, we are excited to be partnering with Magnolia Pictures to bring Alex’s brilliant film to audiences around the country,” said Bob DeBitetto, President of A&E Network and BIO Channel.
