Magnolia Acquires Freakonomics

Wow! The first Tribeca Film Festival feature has already been snapped up, and we're still two weeks from opening day. Magnolia Pictures has picked up the North American rights for the all-star documentary Freakonomics, the Festival's closing night gala.

The president of Magnolia, Eamonn Bowles, says, "As huge fans of the book, the film version of Freakonomics is something that we've been excited about ever since we caught wind of it... The fact that this dream project is being realized by the 'dream team' of documentary filmmakers makes this a major film event. We couldn't be more thrilled."

We're pretty darn excited as well. Freakonomics is a wild and woolly look at economics through a funky looking glass where baby names have long-term effects, Sumo wrestlers secretly cheat, and much more, as written about in the best seller by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. Its adaptation is equally unique, with six different critically acclaimed directors at the helm: The King of Kong's Seth Gordon, Why We Fight's Eugene Jarecki, Academy Award-winner Alex Gibney (Casino Jack and the United States of Money, Taxi to the Dark Side), and Academy Award nominees Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp, the upcoming 12th and Delaware) and Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me).

Learn when and where you can see Freakonomics at the Festival with our handy dandy film guide. There will be a can't-miss Q&A after the May 1 screening with the directors and authors, as well.

Congratulations to the filmmakers, and to Magnolia!
