Doha TFF: Spotlight on Mira Nair

Mira Nair is amazing. She is a powerful woman director who has made some of the most interesting films of the past 20 years, from the breakthrough Salaam Bombay! (1988) to the jubilant Monsoon Wedding (2001) to the sublime The Namesake (2006). Her films cannot be characterized by theme, location, time period, or type; rather, the only criteria is that stories illuminate the human condition.
Nair back this month with not one, but two new films: Amelia, which will open the 2009 Doha Tribeca Film Festival on October 29, and New York, I Love You, a companion piece to the 2006 hit, Paris, je t'aime.
In the above clip, from the Doha TFF, Nair talks about the diverse inspirations for her films, which keep her on her toes. "If we don't tell our stories, no one else will," she says, explaining she likes her films to "cross borders." Indeed!

The Doha Tribeca Film Festival will take place from October 29 to November 1, 2009.
