TKA Reporter's' Blog: Street Fair

On Saturday, May first, one of the warmest days of 2010, it was the Tribeca Film Festival Family Street Fair. Part of Greenwich Street was packed with people; families, students from nearby schools, and people that just lived in the area. There were little booths where you could buy things like food, snacks, drinks, or get your picture taken in front of a green screen. But besides being a reporter, I was there for something really exciting that I would be part of - The Church Street School for Music and Art's Guitar Mania event! I was really excited to be there, because I love playing guitar, and Mike D from the hip-hop/rap band called the Beastie Boys was going to be there!
About forty-five minutes before the event, most of the guitarists that were going to play went into a room in Church Street to practice the four tunes we were going to play at the concert; Yellow Submarine by the Beatles, I'm Yours by Jason Mraz, Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple, and a Blues song the music instructors created.
When we finally got on the stage (or rather, in front of the stage- there wasn't a lot of room), we played all the songs in this order: Yellow Submarine, I'm Yours, Smoke On The Water, and the Blues. It was really hard to hear yourself because of all of the electric guitars, but it was still really fun.
After the performance, I got to interview Mike D! He told me that his band first started out as a hard-core punk rock band, but then he and his two friends in the band started getting into hip-hop and rap.
Being part of the Family Street Fair was really exciting, and I hope I
could do something like it again!!
