TKA Reporter's' Blog: Racing Dreams

Margaret

I had an extremely good time on Saturday, April 25. Sure, school was out, but the best part was going to the worldwide premiere of Marshall Curry's new documentary, Racing Dreams. My classmate, and fellow reporter, Gavin was also there, and together we interviewed a bunch of people who worked on Racing Dreams, then saw the movie itself!

When we first arrived, the crew took a few shots of Gavin and me by a real race car! It was so cool! Next we got onto the red carpet, and worked on our intro. Finally it was time to start interviewing, and I couldn't believe who walked on first. It was Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Dany Garcia, the executive producers of Racing Dreams. They were both really nice, and The Rock was funny too. Whenever we asked Dany a question, he would answer for her, then let her answer in her own words.

Then we interviewed Marshall Curry, the director. He was really nice too, and when we were done, we took a picture with him that turned out pretty well.  Next to walk the red carpet were the kids or I should say teenagers in the documentary: Brandon Warren, Annabeth Barnes, and Josh Hobson. They seemed nice, and you could quickly tell that they had one huge goal for their future... NASCAR racing. They were the last people who walked the carpet, so after that, we went inside the SVA theater, to watch the documentary, Racing Dreams. It was really good, I mean really good, and when it was over, we went home, taking some great memories with us.

You might think a movie about kid’s go-kart racing is probably not such an exciting movie.

Wrong!

Racing Dreams is a documentary about three kids (Josh, Annabeth, and Brandon) who love racing and are extremely good at it. The movie doesn't only show the kids on the racetrack, but it also takes place at their homes and shows how difficult their lives are. Brandon had an especially hard time because his dad was/is a drug addict and gets arrested during the movie.

This documentary shows how the kids deal with winning and losing, and it also explains how expensive racing is. The money part is a big problem for the racers, because they love driving on the racetrack and some of them can't afford to do what they love to do. But, if the kids get enough sponsors, they might get enough money to continue racing.

When the three main characters meet each other, two of them (Annabeth and Brandon) start to have a crush on each other. To find out if Annabeth likes him, Brandon calls her and asks her if she does. Of course, Annabeth says yes (so does Brandon when she asks him). Later in the movie, it doesn't show if they still have a crush on each other, and I'm curious to know if they still do now.

Throughout the movie, there are 5 races. There are also two groups of racers. One is the Senior group, and one is the Junior group. Brandon is in the Senior group and Annabeth and Josh are in the Junior group. At the end of the movie, the racing champion for the Senior group is Brandon (yay) and the racing champion for the Junior group is Josh (yay)! Annabeth gets in fifth place, which is good, but she would have liked a better position.

Eventually, Brandon finds out that his grandparents can't afford to pay for his racing equipment any longer, which sadly means that Brandon can't race any more. So, now Brandon can't do the thing he enjoys the most and that he might have done for a living in the future.

Although the end is a little confusing for me, for example, it doesn't tell you if any of the kids is still racing, Racing Dreams is a must see movie, especially for all of those NASCAR lovers out there!
