TKA Reporter's' Blog: Church St. School

Truman

Hey everyone, Long time no talk, first time since last year!  Anyway, my friend Gavin and I just came back from Church St. School for Music & Arts, and we learned some interesting stuff. First of all, during this year’s Tribeca Film Festival Street Fair, there’s going be a big stage at Church Street School at 74 Warren Street full of people, getting’ down, jamming and playing guitars. Anyone can come and play! This year is Church St. School’s 20th year anniversary, and that’s why they’re having this big musical event, which sounds pretty fun.

We were talking to Lisa Ecklund-Flores, the founder of Church St. School about its history. She had been playing piano since she was a little girl, and played all through high school, but hadn’t learned about music improvisation until college. “Music improve”, she says, “is a whole different world of music.”  She learned that music is not about reading music off a paper, but writing your own music.  She didn’t want kids to miss out on this fun part of learning music, so she created the Church St. School for Music & Arts to teach kids about writing their own music, so they didn’t have to wait until college to get in on all the fun of creating!
