TKA Reporters' Blog: Community Kickoff Party

Margaret

On Monday, I went to the Community Kickoff Party for the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. The other kid from Tribeca Kids Access was Truman, and as reporters, our main job was, of course, interviewing. However, we got to do some pretty cool stuff besides that too. The event started with Joy Behar reading her new children's book SheetzuCacaPoopoo: Max Goes To The Dogs. After that, she started signing books, and Truman and I immediately got in line. When she finished signing, the interviews started.

Our first real interview was with Lisa Ripperger, the principal of P.S. 234. We were kind of nervous, though after, I realized there was no need to be. Everything had turned out fine. Now I thought it was fun, and couldn't wait to do another interview. Happily, my wish was soon granted when we got a chance to interview Joy Behar. We were still a bit nervous, but once again, there was no need to be.

When that was done we had an odd surprise. NY1 wanted to interview us! They did, but it felt kind of odd considering we had been the interviewers a minute ago, and suddenly the tables turned. It turned out fine though, and soon we were back to being the interviewers.

The next seven people we interviewed were Michael Sladek (director of Con Artist), Julio DePietro (The Good Guy), Gloria La Morte (Entre nos), Josh Zeman (Cropsey), a woman that was going to interview them, the Magician, who was cool because his wallet just happened to catch on fire when he opened it, and he made Truman and me massive balloon hats, and finally, a girl our age who later walked off with our balloon hats.

In between those interviews, we listened to Sara Watkins singing and playing the fiddle. After her performance, we interviewed her, and right after, the Community Kickoff Party ended. I had a lot of fun, and I can't wait for the next event.

Truman

It was really fun. We got to interview Joy Behar from the TV show “The View.” She was at Barnes & Noble to talk about her new children’s book, SheetzuCacaPoopoo: Max Goes To The Dogs. I’ll tell you a little bit about it... When Max causes trouble around the house he goes to doggy day care. At first Max is scared and shy because all the big dogs look mean and scary and all the little dogs already have friends so they just ignore him. After a little while Max finds out that the big dogs are the KING of doggy day care just because they’re big and scare the little dogs.  But that’s all I’m going to tell you because otherwise I’ll ruin the book for you.

Being at the event was a lot of fun. We also got to interview Gloria La Morte, and she told us about the movie she co-directed (with Paola Mendoza) Entre nos, which is about a family in South America. When they move from Colombia to New York the father abandons the family and the mother has to raise the two children on her own. We also got to interview Joshua Zeman, the co-director (with Barbara Brancaccio) of Cropsey, Michael Sladek, director of Con Artist, and Julio DePietro, director of The Good Guy.

It was really weird being on camera and asking questions about famous people, to the famous people! It was Margaret’s and my first event, so we got stumped a couple of times on what we were supposed to say, but it was still awesome! It was a little intimidating, because all the people we interviewed seemed like professionals and weren’t nervous at all. I tried to look calm and not scared at all, and I tried to act like a professional, but believe me I was really nervous!
