Drama

Filmmaker Morrisa Maltz paints a poignant and authentic portrait of childhood friendship through the eyes of Jazzy, a young Oglala Lakota girl growing up in South Dakota. Spanning from ages 6 to 12, the film follows Jazzy and her best friend Syriah as they navigate the joys and challenges of their ever-changing relationship, capturing the essence of their unique perspective with a dreamlike, documentary-style approach.

When Jazzy learns that Syriah is moving away, she confronts the heartbreaks of growing up and the realities of the adult world. A spiritual successor to their previous film, The Unknown Country, Maltz's collaboration with producer Lainey Bearkiller Shangreaux results in an emotionally resonant coming-of-age drama that deeply immerses the audience in the lives of these two young girls. With touching performances from the young leads and appearances by notable actors such as Executive Producer Lily Gladstone, Jazzy is a beautifully crafted film that explores the profound impact friendship has on the formative years of childhood.––Jarod Neece
